Best Nail Artist in North Carolina!

I had the pleasure of interviewing the best nail Artist on the rise, and owner of Gloria’s Nail Bar from Siler City North Carolina the amazing Gloria Borrayo. We discuss her glorious career from the beginning to the present, and the many great opportunities the future has in store for her. Gloria got her first set of nails done when she was 14 years old in California. This is where it all began.

Tell us about your career. Where did it start? How did you discover your talent?

After the first experience, I was so intrigued to figure out how to do them myself. I started to practice doing my own nails. After high school, I went to school for nails and got my certification. It took me two months to finish the course. I didn’t really know that I was going to do nails as a career I just knew I liked doing my own nails. I always thought I would be too nervous to do other peoples nails.  I worked at 3 different locations before I finally just decided I’d work on my own.

Who were the biggest inspirations for your nail technician career?

Mary Negron is honestly one of my biggest inspirations. She is a nail artist as well as a mentor and an international educator. She travels a lot to Nigeria and she has a salon there as well. She is such a positive person and she is so humble. Ever since I’ve followed her on all social media she’s always followed and added me back. A person like her with so much world experience acknowledges me. I am still so grateful for her positive influence in my life. She always responds to me when I have any questions. She is such a giver and travels all over the world spreading love and doing what she loves to do. Everything she does is just so genuine and I hope to be at least half as great as she is and hopefully I can have the honor of meeting her in person one day.

Wow, she is an amazing artist! I checked out her face book page and just love her work! She sounds like a great inspiration, I am glad you found her.
What do you enjoy most about your nail technician career?

This is honestly my favorite question because the answer is simple, I love being my own boss! It’s something like no other. I set my own schedule and times for work. No one is over my head telling me what to do and telling me how to do things. I run my own salon, just me by myself. I work only by appointments so it’s easy for me to know if ill have a busy day or a short day. I usually do about 2-3 busy days In the week and the other days I will take a couple people in. (those are my slow days) but in the three busy days, I make my weeks total. I am okay with my slow days because I do not like to overwork myself. The point of my career is to work however I want so I do try to take some days to relax and have my back recuperate from my busy days. (I hunch over a lot) I also always set a goal for every week and I usually try to meet that goal. It also motivates me to work. I also enjoy that doing nails isn’t just a form of income, for me, it’s a passion because ever since I can remember I’ve loved art and creating stuff with my hands. I always refer to myself as a nail artist because I do consider my career as a form of art.

I love your response! Being your own boss is amazing. You get to balance your life with your passion.
What are some of your personal and/or professional goals for the future?

I definitely want to become a nail instructor. I feel like the nail school I attended was okay, but it lacked creativity. Everything I know how to do I’ve taught myself. I knew how to do acrylics way before I went to school for it. Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook have been my teachers in the growth process of my career. A personal goal of mine is to become a teacher, teach a group of students to do nails the way I do them and have them work at my salon. Of course, I wouldn’t work in my older days but I’d like to leave a group of people that I’d trust to run the salon for me.

You would be an amazing instructor! Teaching monthly seminars around the US would benefit many aspiring nail artist, think about it. You would still be your own boss and now you would be helping many that are seeking the knowledge you have.
It’s always fun to ask this question; if not a Nail Tech what line of work do you think you would be in?

I was so indecisive of what I wanted to do with my life when I graduated high school. I went to college to study criminal justice, so I think I’d probably be in the law enforcement field by now. It’s not something I EVER thought of doing. It was interesting to me but definitely was a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, I quit college but I quit to go to nail school so it wasn’t all that much of a loss. I am happy with the path I chose.

Great choice! I am happy you are following your heart.

Thank you for your time, Gloria. Any final message to the many Gloria’s  Nail Bar fans?

My advice to anyone out there is to do something that you truly love to do and are passionate for as opposed to working a 9-5 job that you’re miserable at. There’s no better feeling than being your own boss and making your own money and not having to report yourself to anyone BUT the person staring back in the mirror. Always stay humble no matter where life takes you. Whether it’s the road to success and you become famous or you stay in your small town where you were born and raised in. Never let that change who you are and never forget where you started. I started from the bottom because it’s been a struggle since then and I am nowhere close to where I want to be yet but I can honestly say I am in a better place. Thank God!

That is great advice! Thank you again for your time and all your amazing work, I really enjoyed this fabulous time with you!

Fashion Stylist

I am currently attending the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco and this semester I took a Fashion Styling course. I have been one of my most favorite classes! I learned a stylist has many jobs. One of them is selecting clothes and accessories for print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, published editorial features, any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. As a stylist, one must choose the model’s hair style, makeup, and nail polish. A few pose suggestions are also part of the job but if working with a photographer they will also have great suggestions for poses.

Stylist usually borrows and return the accessories and clothing. If funds are available, the items can be bought. Some boutique stores and designers will ask for a deposit in case the garments get damaged. There is also a borrowing fee, some retail stores charge a fee to lend you the clothes. Before this class, I had no idea what a stylist did. Now I can confidently say I am a stylist. I learned many new things about myself from this class. I love styling! I love shopping and putting outfits together. I love photographing for fashion.

Fashion is my passion. Not just the clothing, but the hard work that gets put into it. All the little details that no one ever sees. They only see the finished picture. I love the art behind organizing and conducting a photo shoot. It’s hard work and has many ups and downs. It has prepared me for my career in many ways I can’t describe, the knowledge I have f this class is infinite. I am prepared for the worst, like your photographer canceling last minute, now you have to step up and try to capture the perfect moment in time. I want to thank professor Banu Reynolds for this amazing journey and this wonderful soul awakening experience.

Hair and Makeup 2017

For this seasons Hair and Makeup the ones I have chosen are my favorites because they all are timeless and chic. The first image is from the Alice + Olivia collection. This style is called festival lingering. I love it because it looks low key and casual chic. I love the braid look and I just found out how to get this look, I am excited to try it out!

The second image is from the Carolina Herrera collection. This style is called Twisted minimalism. I like it because it gives straight hair a brilliant twist! It looks simple but beautiful. The makeup pairs perfect with this hairstyle with bold colors it makes the presentation look fierce.

The third image is from the Malan Breton collection. This is my favorite, it is called Modern Fairytale. I love the hairstyle because it looks low key and the curls still look amazing.

Pencil skirts are a timeless silhouette. Since the beginning of its time, it has proven to be a great way to show of the womens curves no matter its length. Some of the similarities from the past to the present are the simple and stylish design. In the past it was used as a formal skirt for work or formal occasions. Now it is used for several occasions due to the many designs available. This skirt can be easily mixed with many fashionable pieces that gives the wearer a confident appearance.

Actress of the Year

2015-09-04 001 2015-09-04 188Picture by vmargarita.com

I had the pleasure of interviewing an Actress/Model on the rise, from Stockton California the great Taylor Hurles. We discuss her glorious career from the beginning to the present, and the many great opportunities the future has in store for her.

Tell me about yourself.
I am from Stockton California, and I am a young mommy. I attend UCSB for Film and Media Studies; I will be graduating this June! Hell Yes! I am currently applying to grad school my top picks are NYU, JULLIARD, and UCLA lets cross our fingers and hope I get into one of those schools. I have been working hard for many years, and I am ready for it to pay off.

Lets begin with Modeling, how would you describe your personal style, Where do you pull your inspiration from?
My personal style comes from Hip-Hop/ Indie/ 1970s-90s era/genres. I usually think of outfits that I can put together in my head and then watching movies or listening to songs inspires me. For example when rappers will say things like when BIG said “I stay Coogi down to the socks,” I’ll think of like buying a Coogi sweater and matching it with some distressed jeans, and some Nikes or something. Basically just observing the music I listen to, movies etc.

Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why?
Adriana Lima is absolutely beautiful. And as for as designers, I do not really have any specific favorites if I like something I just like it.

Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs, and catalogs do you visit most often?

I like to read Santa Barbara Life and Style Magazine, Vogue, Parents Magazine (where I get ideas for my son etc.)

It is my understanding you are working on a documentary, as a filmmaker what’s harder: getting started or being able to keep going?
I would say being able to continue is the hardest part, finding funding, finding equipment, people etc. You want quality work and to get quality it costs. However, there are ways to minimize costs, I YouTube things or do research when I find myself trying to overcome and obstacle. You honestly have to just get out there and do it though, if it is what you love you just have to work with what you have and if it’s meant the rest will come.

When inspiration is waning, when you feel creatively sapped, what do you do? How do you stay fresh?
What I do is watch movies or television shows I enjoy that have good writing, and cinematic messages. I get inspired easily by films and TV shows. This fuels my desire to continue all around. I see styles I like in movies and try to recreate the outfits in a new way for shoots, and I also get new writing ideas from watching movies. Some of my favorite movies are Blow, Liberal Arts, The Godfather, ALL of the Adam Sandler movies, Home Alone TV favs are House of Cards, Full House, The Office.

Why do you think there are so few women in filmmaking?
I guess it depends on what aspect. There are a lot of female writers, casting directors, and producers. I think that as far as directors, there are a lot of male directors, but in order to get the films out there you need a strong producer, so women have the tougher job sometimes in the background pulling everything together.

There are new stories everywhere we look. There are a million ways to say the same thing and make it fresh. What I do is I think of the greatest possible thing that could happen to character, or the worst possible thing, and then I continue the story in that direction. Sometimes hyperbolizing situations helps you think of new insights. I also use empathy to try and feel and do what the character would do in a situation or in a story in order to create new character obstacles. Often things that happen to people in real life make for the best fictional stories.

Naturally, being in filmmaking led you into acting, What are your career goals as an Actress?
Acting was my first love, and filmmaking has impregnated me with desire to make that dream a reality. My career goals would be either to continue professional training with and MFA, and get an MBA to manage myself and receive private training as well. I want to be a real actress not a reality show star but someone who makes you remember why movies became such a rich entertainment for this country, because they make you feel something real. I want to act in movies, write movies, and develop movies like that. That is my goal.

What motivates you to act?
Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Sandler, Kevin Spacey, Angelina Jolie, Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, Samira Wiley… the list goes on but watching these actors is like magic. It brings me back to my first love.

Who is your favorite actor? Why?
Johnny Depp. He came from nothing and he is one of the biggest stars because of his talent. He is always in touch with his characters and from an actors standpoint it is difficult to build an emotional connection with your characters, but he does it, every time.

If you could take on any movie role from the past, who would it be and why?
I would be Rachel McAdams in the Notebook because it was such a good heartfelt role. To be in love on screen and make others feel that would be amazing.Headshot1editedPicture by V. Margarita- vmargarita.com

What sort of acting roles do you hope you are performing in the future?
I would like to act for film and Broadway.

It’s always fun to ask this question; if not a model or actress, what line of work do you think you would be in?
I would probably be in financial planning, or business owning. I am good at managing things and giving people advice and both of those careers rely on those aspects. We all hear so often about the lack of original stories in the world. That we’ve all “seen it before”. How do you stay fresh in the face of an idea like that?

Are you working on any current projects whether it is in filmmaking, acting or modeling?
I am working on developing a mystery/horror film, and the documentary Streets of Stockton. I am also planning an autobiography called Hoodrat Tendencies!

How can your fan check out your work and stay up to date with your accomplishments?
Fans can follow me on instagram @taylluvia, and my website will be up soon. I am also a columnist for Uloop, which is an online newspaper for college students, take a peek at my articles!

Thank you for your time Taylor. Any final message to the fans?
My final message is to follow your dreams, and get educated. Education can be a way out if you come from an impoverished community with little resources and even if you don’t still educate yourself about what you want to do. The people who succeed are the ones who live and breath what they love and they never stop. Don’t let people tell you who you are, create who you are with what you love.

Skin Perfection!

When choosing a moisturizer, aim for the ones that include SPF in its formula.

When you do not use an SPF your skin is being exposed to the rays of the sun (whether or not the sun is out). Excess exposure to the sun causes wrinkles; it damages your skin causing sunspots, uneven skin tone and in critical cases, skin cancer.

Ideally go with an oil-free moisturizer to achieve the flawless complexion. Moisturizing is a critical step in your regime. It doesn’t matter if your face is very oily of really dry. Moisturizing is for everyone. It balances your facial oil productivity. Choose a moisturizer that has a multi vitamin formula. It’s a win-win situation; your face is being moisturized as well as getting healthier and radiant.

Start by applying SPF moisturizer on your face. Let the moisturizer dry for two minutes.

Following the moisturizer, apply a shine/pore minimizer. When choosing a pore minimizer choose wisely. Make sure you read the ingredients; so many pore/shine minimizers have chemicals that clog your pores and can cause acne breakouts. This is not ideal when trying to achieve flawless skin.

Look for something that quickly minimizes the appearance of pores & fine lines. Try it on your had first if it is silky, lightweight, and translucent then it will work great. A pore/shine minimizer helps makeup stay put. Also try to find one that contains a Vitamin E. Vitamin E is known to protect skin from free radicals.

After applying a thin layer of the shine/pore minimizing balm, let it dry for two minutes.

Note: If you fail to allow appropriate time for the moisturizers to dry they will give your skin the appearance of peeling. This combo is amazing for your skin, it stops shine and the pore minimizer gives your skin a porcelain look.
