Best Nail Artist in North Carolina!

I had the pleasure of interviewing the best nail Artist on the rise, and owner of Gloria’s Nail Bar from Siler City North Carolina the amazing Gloria Borrayo. We discuss her glorious career from the beginning to the present, and the many great opportunities the future has in store for her. Gloria got her first set of nails done when she was 14 years old in California. This is where it all began.

Tell us about your career. Where did it start? How did you discover your talent?

After the first experience, I was so intrigued to figure out how to do them myself. I started to practice doing my own nails. After high school, I went to school for nails and got my certification. It took me two months to finish the course. I didn’t really know that I was going to do nails as a career I just knew I liked doing my own nails. I always thought I would be too nervous to do other peoples nails.  I worked at 3 different locations before I finally just decided I’d work on my own.

Who were the biggest inspirations for your nail technician career?

Mary Negron is honestly one of my biggest inspirations. She is a nail artist as well as a mentor and an international educator. She travels a lot to Nigeria and she has a salon there as well. She is such a positive person and she is so humble. Ever since I’ve followed her on all social media she’s always followed and added me back. A person like her with so much world experience acknowledges me. I am still so grateful for her positive influence in my life. She always responds to me when I have any questions. She is such a giver and travels all over the world spreading love and doing what she loves to do. Everything she does is just so genuine and I hope to be at least half as great as she is and hopefully I can have the honor of meeting her in person one day.

Wow, she is an amazing artist! I checked out her face book page and just love her work! She sounds like a great inspiration, I am glad you found her.
What do you enjoy most about your nail technician career?

This is honestly my favorite question because the answer is simple, I love being my own boss! It’s something like no other. I set my own schedule and times for work. No one is over my head telling me what to do and telling me how to do things. I run my own salon, just me by myself. I work only by appointments so it’s easy for me to know if ill have a busy day or a short day. I usually do about 2-3 busy days In the week and the other days I will take a couple people in. (those are my slow days) but in the three busy days, I make my weeks total. I am okay with my slow days because I do not like to overwork myself. The point of my career is to work however I want so I do try to take some days to relax and have my back recuperate from my busy days. (I hunch over a lot) I also always set a goal for every week and I usually try to meet that goal. It also motivates me to work. I also enjoy that doing nails isn’t just a form of income, for me, it’s a passion because ever since I can remember I’ve loved art and creating stuff with my hands. I always refer to myself as a nail artist because I do consider my career as a form of art.

I love your response! Being your own boss is amazing. You get to balance your life with your passion.
What are some of your personal and/or professional goals for the future?

I definitely want to become a nail instructor. I feel like the nail school I attended was okay, but it lacked creativity. Everything I know how to do I’ve taught myself. I knew how to do acrylics way before I went to school for it. Youtube, Instagram, and Facebook have been my teachers in the growth process of my career. A personal goal of mine is to become a teacher, teach a group of students to do nails the way I do them and have them work at my salon. Of course, I wouldn’t work in my older days but I’d like to leave a group of people that I’d trust to run the salon for me.

You would be an amazing instructor! Teaching monthly seminars around the US would benefit many aspiring nail artist, think about it. You would still be your own boss and now you would be helping many that are seeking the knowledge you have.
It’s always fun to ask this question; if not a Nail Tech what line of work do you think you would be in?

I was so indecisive of what I wanted to do with my life when I graduated high school. I went to college to study criminal justice, so I think I’d probably be in the law enforcement field by now. It’s not something I EVER thought of doing. It was interesting to me but definitely was a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, I quit college but I quit to go to nail school so it wasn’t all that much of a loss. I am happy with the path I chose.

Great choice! I am happy you are following your heart.

Thank you for your time, Gloria. Any final message to the many Gloria’s  Nail Bar fans?

My advice to anyone out there is to do something that you truly love to do and are passionate for as opposed to working a 9-5 job that you’re miserable at. There’s no better feeling than being your own boss and making your own money and not having to report yourself to anyone BUT the person staring back in the mirror. Always stay humble no matter where life takes you. Whether it’s the road to success and you become famous or you stay in your small town where you were born and raised in. Never let that change who you are and never forget where you started. I started from the bottom because it’s been a struggle since then and I am nowhere close to where I want to be yet but I can honestly say I am in a better place. Thank God!

That is great advice! Thank you again for your time and all your amazing work, I really enjoyed this fabulous time with you!

Singing Luna on the Rise

I had the pleasure of interviewing professional Singer, from Santa Barbara California the amazing Luna. Enjoy!

When & why did you first start singing?

I started singing in church. I’m really unsure of the age that I started singing, I might have been six. The reason why I started singing, I remember this woman she had come from another church to sing to us and I was completely just blown away by how her voice sounded and not only her voice but the feelings that she was giving me. I’m pretty sure that she was giving everybody else there. I remember just praying and begging and just asking God, “I want to be blessed with a talent like that, I want to be able to sing like her, if not at least be able to reach people with my voice and music”. I began singing around the house since I was very religious at that time, I was just singing a lot of gospel music by myself. I didn’t really want anybody else to hear me, I was always at home. One day my step-dad heard me and said that I sounded pretty good and since that compliment, I started singing at church.

Where would you most like to perform?
I haven’t really put much thought into where I would love to perform. Since I’m just starting out, I’m just seeing where the music takes me. I hope it does get to that point where music is my number one priority because I’d be extremely happy with that.
Who would you most like to open for?
I would like to open for Lauryn Hill. I’d be really excited to open up for anybody that’s been extremely successful in the music business.
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be a police officer by now. I’ve always wanted to be catching bad people but also helping people. I know that being a cop isn’t just about giving people tickets and arresting people I think to be a police officer, you have to be active within your community.

If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
I think when I established myself in music, I would definitely want to venture out into rock because growing up I used to listen to a lot of like alternative rock metal because that genre means a lot to me.
Any final advice to your fans?
Advice? Don’t let any criticism or anything like that stop you from doing what you want to do. I’m also going to be blunt, you actually have to be serious about it. I probably wasted a lot of time just daydreaming about doing music and not really putting it into action. I feel if I would have stopped daydreaming I’d probably be where I want to be. Don’t waste any time! Start working on what you want to do. Work on your passion. Time doesn’t stop for anybody and you know in a blink of an eye, you can be 40 years old and be like f*** what the hell have I been doing?! where’d all the time go?

Best Store of the Summer!

My current favorite retail store is Old Navy. The great quality of the clothing and the way they set up the store draws me into the environment. The store and website stand out among other retailers because of its competitive prices and great quality in clothing. Also, the advertising ads are fun and display the prices of the clothing, most retailers do not do this in their ads. Here are some examples of what I mean.

The huge windows they have attracts me because I can see all the front section of the store from the outside. While standing outside I can see the new pieces they have on display and the sales they have going on. This draws me into the store. While I am inside, I see the prices hanging from every fixture. This is appealing to me because I can look at the price and look at the garment and if I like it I can grab my size and try it on. If I don’t I can just continue to walk around the store. The flow of the fixtures is also appealing to me. I love how they set up the store, it feels welcoming and family friendly.

Fashion Stylist

I am currently attending the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco and this semester I took a Fashion Styling course. I have been one of my most favorite classes! I learned a stylist has many jobs. One of them is selecting clothes and accessories for print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, published editorial features, any public appearances made by celebrities, models or other public figures. As a stylist, one must choose the model’s hair style, makeup, and nail polish. A few pose suggestions are also part of the job but if working with a photographer they will also have great suggestions for poses.

Stylist usually borrows and return the accessories and clothing. If funds are available, the items can be bought. Some boutique stores and designers will ask for a deposit in case the garments get damaged. There is also a borrowing fee, some retail stores charge a fee to lend you the clothes. Before this class, I had no idea what a stylist did. Now I can confidently say I am a stylist. I learned many new things about myself from this class. I love styling! I love shopping and putting outfits together. I love photographing for fashion.

Fashion is my passion. Not just the clothing, but the hard work that gets put into it. All the little details that no one ever sees. They only see the finished picture. I love the art behind organizing and conducting a photo shoot. It’s hard work and has many ups and downs. It has prepared me for my career in many ways I can’t describe, the knowledge I have f this class is infinite. I am prepared for the worst, like your photographer canceling last minute, now you have to step up and try to capture the perfect moment in time. I want to thank professor Banu Reynolds for this amazing journey and this wonderful soul awakening experience.

Why do Designers Thrift Shop?

Designers and stylist use garments and accessories from thrift store because they want to be inspired and exposed to new style options. Also everything is extremely low priced, that it helps build great styles on a budget. Sometimes stylist are given budgets that simply can’t be met by shopping for new clothes. There are several great vintage pieces that can’t be bought at your local Neiman Marcus, but can be purchased at the thrift store for $2.

The thrift store is a great place to explore your style and try new things without waisting all your money. You can experiment several outfits and have fun with styling options and not worry about the price, which is usually a big concern. Thrift stores also house years of styles from 1920 to now and stumbling upon a purse from the 1950s, assures that not one will be walking around with the same piece. Your outfits becomes unique and one of a kind just like you, in a saturated world.

Fashion & Politics

It is visually obvious that fashion is inspired by politics. For example, when you stand up or support a cause, getting a shirt or some sort of memorabilia to represent it, is a must. You want everyone to see who you support. The people that don’t know what you are representing, will ask and this is a great way to recruit more believers. We see it all the time with all the recent protest going on, everyone that displays their believes on their body through clothing get taken as a serious believer. It takes a lot of courage to visually display your beliefs on your body verse just speaking them. It has a harsher effect.

Our bodies are incredible when attracting attention. Thats why it is incredible when you are bold enough to wear or display your thoughts on it.

Best Direct to Consumer Retailers

Victoria Secret is amazing when it comes to reaching out to consumers directly. They had a fabulous catalog that held all their great clothing and sales. It was a good way of getting directly to the consumer at home. Though they don’t have them any more, because the use of the online store is at its all time peak. Everyone shops online, now they have stores that are only offered online. The website is better than their catalog. I think it is amazing! I love it. Their target market is from ages 25-35. A business women that wears career clothing but is secretly wearing sexy lingerie underneath.

Ulta Beauty also does a great job at getting directly to the consumer. They mail out catalogs every month and in every catalog they have coupon for either $3.50, $5 or 20% off your total price. Though the use of the internet has gone up extremely. I am not sure how often they send out the catalog any more. The website is also amazing, they have the catalog for your view online. They also have an archive of all the past catalog you can look at. They bring light to the website and the magazine by photographing models that look happy and effortlessly stunning. Their target market is women between the ages of 20-40. Their stores range from drug store makeup like Revlon to Higher end make like Dior. Teachers, college students and mothers, the environment is friendly to women of all ages and careers. Its a place where they have everything beauty.

Macy’s is my all time favorite place to go. They make my experience magical almost every time. The intent it s there to reach out to the consumer through the website. There website is amazing. I think the best because it is interactive. You have the option to chat with beauty advisors and stylist and customer service if you have any questions. You can narrow down your choices by picking what you are looking for. Their target market ranges from 25-55 year old women. The college student to the career women. They have many departments every stylish persons needs. They do have a mail catalog too, this is where they announce their big sales and mail the consumers coupons.

Alice + Olivia

This collection is inspired by The Enchantress of Florence. It is filled Indian emperors and the Italian Renaissance. I love this collection because it looks peppy, with a funky spin, showing cute and colorful wares that are worn in modern-day, it’s so chick. I love the bold colors they used. The high boots with sheen nylons underneath looks amazing!

SPRING 2017 COUTURE

Valentino

The Valentiono collection was inspired by dreams and mythology. Before I had read the inspiration from the designer I felt as if I was in some ancient greek dream of a princess era. As I read the inspiration it all made sense. The designer was able to capture a moment in time. A dream, and create it into flowing pleated gowns statuesque floor-length tabards, cloaks, and Greek sandals. I love it because it looks so pure and simple
These dresses look beautiful.

SPRING 2017 COUTURE

Chanel

This is classic Channel. They always elaborate on the classic suit and make it modern. In this collection they had it myriad candy colors, mint, checkered pink, peach, lavender, yellow and a wide, contrasting belt. It was beautiful! The tan dress is my favorite. The wide belt at the waist, and the crossed crossed chest design is fabulous. I love the thickness and flow of the skirt. It looks like flower petals, so smooth.
