St. John Sports Collection

St-John-Fall-2010-Campaign.jpg-2St. John is re-launching their sports collection for Resort 2017. St. John has been around for decades and is attempting to appeal to a client that is fashion-forward. The collection will have a casual feel. The collection will include sweaters, wide legged pants, joggers, knit bomber jackets and side-striped track pants.

St. John is hooping to expand its evening wear category. It makes up about 24 percent of the revenues. They have recently bought their Chinese license and are hoping to expand there. This is when the desire to push eveningwear started. China has the second largest economy in the world. St. John manufactures 70 percent of their collection in the United States. They also have a large factory in Tijuana, Mexico. This factory produces yarn, creates fabric, cuts and sews everything and makes the metal hardware and metallic buttons.

I admire St. John for evolving into new territory. Moving into another country to expand is not easy. They have been able to do this and now their goal is to succeed over seas by expanding their collections. I have seen some of there collections and they are appealing. I love it! It has a simple, clean and classic feel. Their company manufactures 70 percent of their products here in the United States, it does bring me to the question: will they begin to manufacture all their collections in China, and close the factories here in the United States? I hope not, this will cause a dent in the local economy of Irvine, which is were their factories are. As for maintaining their goal of acquiring new customers, moving into China will definitely help them expand their collections to the masses, bringing them much success.

Luxe Socks

Los Angeles designers Harold Kuhn and Roxanna Beatrice were on the search for a different kind of sock. They began their quest on creating a unique luxurious sock, with out needing to produce high quantities. Overseas factories require a high amount of products to place orders. The designers urged to create something new, something unique. After asking around the realized that not many companies knew anything about socks. They started from scratch and teamed up with a lingerie pattern maker to cut and sew the socks. The final products are a high end sheer sock. They have socks that are made out of mesh, bamboo rayon and velvet. They launched their product at Ron Robinson boutique in Santa Monica California.

The socks are elegant. They have a spicy look due to the sheerness of the fabric. Personally I love them. I would definitely buy a pair. They do not seem new to me. I have seen sheer knee highs with patterns on them. These are very similar to knee highs, I think the only difference is, these are a few inches above the ankle. The cause behind the creation is amazing. The designers wanted to promote the economy here in the USA by creating a different kind of sock. These socks have a unique look and amazing designs. They have made a new option to the sock enthusiast.

ZARA’s Success

Zara is able to have such a short lead time for their products because they have teams of designers that are focused on strictly designing. They also have product managers that enforce the success of their products and employees. The product managers oversee the sourcing, design and production in specific areas, such as women’s coats or women’s dresses. Unlike other companies where the product managers oversee all areas as a whole. The product managers at Zara are responsible for both the initial collection and the response from the public to the collection.

Zara recycles their top sellers each season. They bring back the items that produced big sales and change them a bit. They might change the fabric or just add different colors. This is no secret in the retail business. After carefully watching the fashion change over the seasons at the mall, I have personally seen stores recycle designs from two summers ago. I like how refreshed the new colors or new prints make these items appear. I have seen stores like Macys, Old Navy, Sears and JCP do this with their apparel. This achieves short lead time, and allows more time for new fashion ideas.

Another reason why Zara is so successful is because they spend very little money on advertising.  Many companies spend millions on advertising. Advertising has been the culprit of closing down for some companies. It is expensive and it requires a lot of time and effort, and in many cases its own d31_WORLDWIDE_1024epartment.

There are other companies that have been able to shorten their lead-time, one of them is Forever 21. They bring in merchandise every two weeks. The prices on the clothing is very low but the quality is not always that great. This feels like disposable fashion, you wear it once or twice then go back and get something new. These are definitely not classic, timeless pieces that you can wear for ever or would like to.

I think that the short lead-time creates a gap in quality of the products. This also creates a loss of creativity. The demand for new items quickly causes stress on the designers to just through out ideas and not focus on something specific. This in turn causes a huge clearance aisle for the retailer. I have seen the Forever 21 store dedicate an entire floor of just clearance items. This is a big down fall for the retailer because the profits are not at there best due to such short lead time. I can cut the length in lead-time for my products, but I at this stage of my career I would prefer not to. It would feel like cutting corners. I don’t want to rush the lead-time, I rather wait and see how my products turn out. In the future I would like to try it out to appreciate the difference between products and its quality.
